Municipal Health Reform Signed Into Law

With the House and Senate votes to accept amendments from the Governor, municipal health reform cleared its final hurdle yesterday and was signed into law by the Governor today. The final measure succeeds in achieving significant savings for cities and towns while preserving the voice of labor in decisions about municipal health care benefits.  MBAE commends the Governor and the Legislature for their work on this very important issue.

A report commissioned by MBAE and funded by The Boston Foundation which showed that the explosive growth in the cost of school employee health insurance is crowding out funding for investments in the classroom, provided a significant impetus for addressing these skyrocketing health costs.  Over the last few months, MBAE joined with leading business groups in consistently pushing the legislature and the Governor for meaningful reform.

MBAE is pleased with the fair and reasonable solution that was developed by all stakeholders.  We are optimistic that the funds invested in public education will now be used for their intended purpose.
