Industry-Recognized Credentials
Creating Pathways to Careers
MBAE has been working to expand opportunities for high school students to earn credentials linked to labor market demand in fields and jobs that pay higher living wages. Inspired by success in other states, MBAE proposed legislation that would incentivize high schools to award high-value credentials.
In 2022, most of that legislation was enacted including a new requirement that the state produce an annual list showing which industry-recognized credentials are linked to high-paying jobs and sending that list to all district and school leaders. The legislature also approved a $3 million pilot program to support credentials in the wind energy industry.
The Work Ahead
We continue to advocate for the adoption of other critical elements of the legislation including:
- A financial incentive awarded to schools for every student who earns an industry certification for an occupation that has high employment value or is recognized by a higher education institution
- Alignment of industry-recognized credentials with the state’s high-priority industry sectors
