Many Mass. companies can’t find skilled workers

Gov. Deval Patrick proudly touts the state’s education system, citing high student test scores and graduation rates. And rightly so. Massachusetts has consistently ranked toward the top.
That lofty status, however, may be at risk. According to a new report issued by the Massachusetts Business Alliance for Education, student achievement in the state has leveled off, and Bay State students are at jeopardy of falling behind better-educated students from around the world.
The report also sends an ominous message to all Massachusetts residents, warning that reduced achievement gaps and increasing gaps in work skills will begin to threaten the state’s overall economic welfare. No politician. or education leader, would dispute the link between a strong education and business health.
